August 2022Highly experienced modeller Byam Wight is shown here with his 22kg US Marines OV-10 Bronco by Hangar 9. It has a 108” wingspan and runs two Hyperion Z-50 electric outrunners on 12s which gives it plenty of power. It is a very forgiving model which can fly very slowly when fully flapped and it also has a very benign stall, just dipping the nose with no wing drop which makes it a pleasure to fly. Modelflight only imported 10 kits and won’t be ordering any more which is a shame. The full size was flown by the RAAF in the Vietnam war as a forward air control observation aircraft. It was made in the 1960’s by North American Rockwell. The Australian War Memorial has one fully restored in its Mitchell warehouse. The model breaks down into 7 major components for transport (fits in a Tesla!) but takes quiet a while to assemble given all the connections, not a plane to fly every day!
