December 2016's model of the month is Terry Lovett's very fast Freewing EPO MIG-21.

Fitted with a 80mm ducted fan motor and 6S LiPo generating 2.5 Kg static thrust, this model has a take-off weight of about 3.0 Kg and consequently has startling acceleration.

Terry's model came complete with Electric Servoless Retract Landing Gear and he only needed to add a Spectrum radio and the LiPo pack to complete the PNP kit.

Gowrie Waterhouses's Black Horse Model: Aero L-39 Albatros is a very impressive turbine-powered variant of this 1.4m wingspan model. (Byam Wight's EDF variant was featured as our November 2014 Model of the Month).

Gowrie's model is powered by a SimJet 750 turbine rated at 3Kg thrust, and is fitted with E-Flite retracts and pneumatic wheel brakes.

October's model of the month is Canberra UAV's "VTOL Pilatus Porter", the winner of the UAV Outback Challenge 2016. The basic airframe is the VQ Models Pilatus PC-6 Porter. As flown in the Challenge, the aircraft had a 2.7M wingspan, weighed about 15KG and was powered by a 35CC DLE petrol motor plus eight electric lift motors in a "quad" configuration.

September's model of the month is the venerable Boomerang jet turbine model, now owned and flow with precision by Gowrie Waterhouse.

This model was first purchased by Garrett McDonald in about 2006 as a partial kit for the very first Boomerang prototype from the US model supplier Boomerang RC Jets. To power the Boomerang, Garrett chose a South African Baird micro-turbine rated at 12 Kg static thrust. With take-off weight also around 12 Kg, the vertical performance of the 2.3 m wingspan Boomerang is outstanding.

Gowrie is now offering this very special model for sale, complete with motor and fuel system but "less some radio components" for $1,500.

August's model-of-the-month is Matt Chambers' very impressive Fw 190 D-9.

He assembled this model from the ESM Fw 190 D-9 (Dora) ARF kit. The model has 2.1m wingspan and is powered by a DLE-55 RA motor with a 20-10 3-bladed carbon prop (at $150 per item!). Matt fitted ESM air retracts to the model.

Matt explained that the Fw 190 D (nicknamed Dora; or Long-Nose Dora ("Langnasen-Dora") was intended as the high-altitude performance version of the original Fw 190 A-series, with a supercharged Junkers Jumo 213 V-12 and a pressurized cockpit. The D often featured a red-painted fuselage underside.

July's model-of-the-month is CMAC Scale Rally entrant Ross Smith's immaculate turbo-prop Pilatus PC-21.

Ross told us that this 1/3 scale model was built up from a European Aerobell kit, and is powered by a King Tech turboprop engine. The model is 3.7m long, is 2.5m in wingspan and weighs 24Kg. The scale colour scheme is that of Singapore Air Force.

The PC-21 was a real crowd-pleaser, especially when it performed a 4-point roll right down the strip, sounding very much like a full-sized turboprop.

For June's model-of-the-month we couldn't go past Linton Wilson's immaculate new scale model of the Cirrus SR22T .

He's assembled it from the 98" Hangar 9 kit, with a RCGF 50c twin-cylinder motor and a three-bladed prop. The completed model weights 8.9 kg. Linton has put a lot of extra effort into the interior trim - scale pilot, cockpit carpet, rudder servo concealed under rear seat hatch -- and there's more to come.

For more details on the Cirrus ARF kit from Hangar 9 see RC Groups Review.

By the way, if you'd like to buy a full-sized 2014 Cirrus SR22, it could set you back around USD 650 000! Put your order in at GlobalAir.com

This month we focus on Matt Chambers' re-built Curtis P-40. It first appeared as our model-of-the-month back in May 2015.

Matt explains:

"The P40 is basically the same as before, same engine, retracts, sliding canopy etc. After an ignition failure at the Goulburn club in high winds it suffered major damage. In view of the short time-frame to a meet in Coota, Steve Millar offered to do the repairs.

I gave him creative license for the colour scheme, with the only stipulation that it be military. I did not see the colour scheme/artwork until it was finished.

Thanks to Steve for an awesome job."

The photos above of the re-built P-40 were taken at last month's CMAC Warbirds Day.

Matt's new P-40 colour scheme is based on the full-sized RAAF P-40N Kittyhawk A29-651 which saw service on the island of Morotai (now part of The Republic of Indonesia) in 1945. From Morotai, allied forces, headed by the General of the US Army Douglas MacArthur, prepared for an attack on the Philippines in the Borneo Campaign.

For April 2016, we feature Marius Baumgartner's great-looking new Horizon Hobbies T-28 Trojan.

Marius is one of our most active Junior members, flying regularly at CMAC along with his mother Beate and father Peter (Team B3). He joined CMAC in 2011 and has steadily developed into a skilled R/C model flyer, winning his MAAA Gold Wings in 2014.

Lucky Marius, now aged 14, won the ready-to-fly T-28 in a raffle at the recent 'Warbirds Over NSW' Scale Rally in Cootamundra. This accurate scale model of the T-28 has about 2m wingspan and is 6S-electric powered, with flaps and retracts.

The full-sized North American Aviation T-28 Trojan was a piston-engined military trainer aircraft used by the United States Air Force and United States Navy beginning in the 1950s. Besides its use as a trainer, the T-28 was successfully employed as a counter-insurgency aircraft, primarily during the Vietnam War.

Frequent CMAC visitor Jamie Aquilina (AUS 69241) has an excellent -- if well-used -- example of a familiar ag-plane in his stable. It is the Texas RC Planes Piper PA-25 Pawnee.

Jamie's model has a 96.5 inch wingspan, is powered by a Turnigy 26cc motor and was purchased second-hand at the Coffs Harbour Scale Fly-In several years ago.

The emergency repair tape on the cockpit canopy - Image 4/4 above - was kindly provided by Steve Millar of Canberra's "Across Town Windscreens" at a recent scale rally, after a gust of wind overturned the model in the pits, cracking the perspex.

The full-sized PA-25 Pawnee was an agricultural aircraft produced by Piper Aircraft between 1959 and 1981. It remains a widely used aircraft in agricultural spraying and is also used as a tow plane, or tug, for launching gliders or for towing banners. For more info see Wikipedia: Piper PA-25 Pawnee

Steve (that's Steve Echo Miller, not to be confused with Steve Alpha Millar) has owned his beautiful Curtis Jenny 20% scale model for five years. He built it from the Green Models Curtis Jenny ARF kit.

The model is powered by a Turnigy 52cc two-stroke motor. Interestingly, it sounds just like a four-stroke in the air. Steve explains that he custom-built the muffler from exhaust-grade steel and included special baffles to control the sound.

Nice work Steve. Just needs a scale pilot to win that Blue Ribbon :o)

PS: Wikipedia says that "Curtiss combined the best features of the model J and model N trainers, built for the Army and Navy, and began producing the JN or "Jenny" series of aircraft in 1915 as a training aircraft for the U.S. Army. Production continued after World War I as a civil aircraft." For more see Curtiss JN-4.
